Head of ICT, Pharmacy and Poisons Board Kenya | Software Development & Regulatory Information Systems Specialist

Mr. Gedion Murimi is a distinguished software development and IT management professional with over 20 years of experience specializing in the design, development, and implementation of regulatory information systems. As Head of ICT at the Pharmacy and Poisons Board Kenya (PPBK), he has been a pivotal figure in digitizing and harmonizing health regulations across Africa.

In his capacity at PPBK, Mr. Murimi has led the development and implementation of several critical regulatory systems that have modernized the authority’s operations and strengthened Kenya’s regulatory framework. These include the Pharma Regulatory Information Management System (PRIMS), an online enterprise resource planning (ERP) system that significantly increased revenue, and specialized systems for Pharmacovigilance Electronic Reporting (PVeRs), Electronic Clinical Trials Registry (CTR), and Trade, Drug Registration, and Good Manufacturing Practice. His IT leadership has contributed to Kenya’s recognition as Africa’s Regional Center for Regulatory Excellence in Pharmacovigilance.

Beyond his national responsibilities, Mr. Murimi has made significant contributions to continental regulatory harmonization efforts. In his recent role as a Software Developer at AUDA-NEPAD, he was instrumental in developing the Regulatory Information Sharing Portal (RISP), a platform now adopted by twelve National Medicines Regulatory Authorities (NRAs) and two economic blocs. This work builds upon his foundational experience developing the ‘Zanzibar System’ for the World Bank and NEPAD—the prototype for the RISP—and his role as lead full-stack developer for the IGAD Medicines Regulation Harmonization (MRH) portal.
