Dr. Zivanai Antony Makoni is Head of the Evaluations and Registration Division at the Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ), where he leads marketing authorisation of human, veterinary and complementary medicines and deputises for the Director General.
He is MCAZ’s WHO Global Benchmarking Tool focal point for marketing authorisation, guided the Authority’s advancement from Maturity Level 1 to ML3, and now leads its work towards ML4 through the publication of Public Assessment Reports and Summaries of Product Characteristics. In 15 years of regulatory science he rebuilt MCAZ’s registration system around measurable performance: the KPI-driven framework he introduced in January 2024 delivered 74% more medicines registered, a 77% rise in new submissions and a 122% increase in application revenue. He also led the digitisation of MCAZ’s regulatory processes, culminating in the Authority’s in-house online submission and tracking platform — work recognised with the 2025 MCAZ Corporate Values Award for Innovation.

Continentally, he chaired the African ML3 NRAs Operations Team that developed a reliance mechanism aligned to the African Medicines Agency, AMRH for Africa.
